Highlights of the CASRO Online Research Conference
By Susan Frede, VP, ResearchI’m flying home from the CASRO Online Research Conference in Las Vegas and wanted to share a few thoughts.
The highlight of the event for me and many others was the panel of panelists. Actual panelists from the Las Vegas area came in to share what keeps them engaged as well as what frustrates them. Although I didn’t hear anything surprising, it was powerful to hear the emotion and passion in their voices.
The two presentations on modular survey design by our colleagues at Kantar and our own Frank Kelly were also quite interesting. Their work shows that as attention spans decrease online and more people access the internet via their mobile phones, there is a need to provide shorter, user-friendly survey experiences. Dividing surveys into smaller, bite-sized pieces shows some promise for achieving this.
There were several presentations and a lot of discussion on a topic that I think we’ll hear a lot more about in 2012 – the use of routers. Frank Kelly opened the discussions by explaining why the use of routers is increasing among sample providers, and listed important considerations from a research perspective. The presentations started us down the path to better understanding the implications of using a router as well as some possible best practices.
I also enjoyed the presentation from Ipsos on using qualitative techniques in quantitative studies, which is another way to make surveys more engaging.
A presentation from SSI explored why panelists leave a panel and offered ways to combat this. Lightspeed Research also has done a lot of work in this area, and there are several areas in which SSI’s work complements our own.
I was impressed by the attendance and the number of great papers. I made some new friends and saw some old friends. I’m also reminded of how far we have come as an industry in the online research space. Companies are much more transparent and collaborative now than when the conference first started. Overall, it was an excellent conference and I look forward to an even bigger and better event next year.
